Tucked away in the remote wilderness of Northwestern Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park is home to some of the most pristine natural landscapes in North America. In recent years, conservation efforts in Yellowstone have focused heavily on preventing the spread of invasive species in the park. Zebra mussels, which were inadvertently introduced to North American waterways in the mid-20th century, have been a particularly vexing problem for park rangers. These mussels have no natural predators in Yellowstone, and are known to displace native species as they spread quickly through lakes and ponds.
But how do zebra mussels get into yellowstone in the first place?
In many cases, they’re carried into the park on the bottoms of visiting boats from other parts of the country that have also been invaded by the non-native mussels. That’s why Yellowstone officials have recently instituted new watercraft guidelines that require boats to be thoroughly cleaned before entering the park’s waterways. And according to a recent article in Yellowstone Insider, the park is using two Hotsy high-temperature pressure washers to get the job done right. In fact, the pressure washers have been so effective that the park is trying to purchase four more to keep up with the demand from visiting boaters.
